A Year Later...

I wake up and stare at your tiny hands and feet. You stir and smile from your sleep revealing two little milk teeth. Infectious. I smile back, knowing you do not see me.
but then you opened your eyes and just that instance you see me, your smile became wider.
My Son! It's your birthday!
And all the events of the past year came rushing back.

Hmmmmm....
Olúwatémilórùn.
God, my satisfaction.

20.10.2020

You were born at the early hours of a very memorable day to many Nigerians.
Whoever knew that by the end of that day, the whole nation would sit weeping at the loss of many Nigerian youths?
Who knew that Lagos would be shaken to its foundations in just one day?
Who knew that Nigerian youths would be broken and hopes dashed this day?
No one.
What started out as a good day quickly became a bloodbath at the Lekki tollgate.

As the night crawled in....
I could still hardly move but I was very aware of all that was going on.
And I had my team with me.
My support.
They were alert and stuck with me at the hospital as there was total lock down in Lagos.
The doctors who had to rush down to their hospitals to save lives, were detained and harassed;
Ambulances were ambushed
And hoodlums looting everywhere.
But that's not what this story is really about.

This story is about YOU, Témi.

YOU were born.
YOU survived.
Despite all the complications that surprisingly came up,
Despite the surgery and medications you had to endure, you fought through it all.

We prayed and he answered.
Olúwatémilórùn.
God, my satisfaction.

Fastforward to 20.10.2021, you flashed me those tiny little teeth as you woke up and saw my face.
And all I could do was pick you up and hold you tight in a deep hug, thanking God for his mercy and love.

You struggled out of my embrace and crawled down from the bed, ready to start the day.
Temi is getting more independent.
But that is not the gist.

The story once again is that you survived;
You grew.
We watched you grow right before our very eyes.
We are watching you as you grow by the day into the beautiful one year old you are today.

Olúwatémilórùn.
